Magistrate Robert C. Erler (retired)

Attorney Robert C. Erler grew up on the East Coast and enjoyed over 20 years of active duty in the U.S. Air Force being assigned to stations throughout the United States as well as foreign countries and retired at the rank of Lt. Colonel.

After graduating from Stevens Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Engineering degree he entered the United States Air Force.   Upon completion of flight school, as a lieutenant he flew O1A aircraft with the Vietnamese Air Force at Danang Air Base, Republic of South Vietnam, accumulating 1000 hours flying time including over 600 hours of combat time.  He was awarded 13 Air Medals and the Distinguished Flying Cross for his service in South Vietnam.

During his Air Force career he attended the University of Hawaii where he earned his Masters Degree in Business Administration.

After being assigned to the USAF Academy where he taught cadets to fly T-41 (Cessna 172) aircraft, he attended law school at the University of Denver and for a semester supervised the student law office.  He was admitted to the Colorado Bar in 1982 and began his Colorado Springs law career at Pikes Peak Legal Services.  During his 11 years as a private attorney he practiced in the areas of general civil, domestic, and criminal law until his appointment to the bench as a Magistrate in the 4th Judicial District in January, 1994 where he remained until his retirement in 2013.

In his capacity as Magistrate he handled thousands of cases in the areas of Domestic and Juvenile law including contested temporary and final orders, parenting time battles, and issues of maintenance and child support where his job was to enter orders which followed the law after receiving properly admitted evidence.

In addition to working commitments Magistrate Erler served on the Board of Pikes Peak Legal Services. He remains active in his local community where he served as President of the Black Forest Community Club as well as Assistant Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 70, and leader in the 4H club.  In his spare time he enjoys flying his Mooney airplane, hiking, biking, hunting, and reading.
